The Fragrance Pyramid
The fragrance pyramid
A perfume does not smell the same in the first second and three hours later. The fragrance pyramid describes this change in three levels: top, heart and base notes.

Frequently asked questions
What is a fragrance pyramid?
It describes a perfume according to how fast its materials evaporate. The lightest leave quickly, the heaviest stay for hours.
Why does a perfume change on the skin?
Each note evaporates at its own pace. Skin warmth matters too: the same perfume can develop differently from one person to another.
How long should I wait before judging a perfume?
At least 30 minutes, so the top notes can give way to the heart. To judge the base, keep it on for a few hours.
Do all perfumes have three levels?
No. Some compositions are more linear and change little from start to finish. The pyramid is still a useful way to compare them.
