Why Some Women Wear Men's Perfumes

Can a Perfume Be Masculine on One Person and Feminine on Another?
The world of perfume loves categories.
Perfumes for men.
Perfumes for women.
Unisex perfumes.
These labels are practical. They help you find your way. But they say nothing about what actually happens when a fragrance meets a particular skin, a particular personality, a particular way of moving through the world.
The History of Gendered Perfumes
The distinction between masculine and feminine perfumes is largely a 20th century marketing invention. Before the 1900s, perfume was simply perfume — worn by anyone who could afford it, without gendered connotation.
It was the rise of mass-market perfumery, and particularly the post-war era, that created the codification: citrus and fougères for men, florals and powdery accords for women. These conventions were convenient for marketing — but they were never biological truths.
Why More Women Are Wearing Men's Perfumes
Today, an increasing number of women deliberately choose fragrances from the masculine range. The reasons are varied:
- Longevity and projection: Masculine fragrances are often formulated with heavier, more tenacious base notes (oud, labdanum, dry woods, smoky resins). They last longer on skin and project further.
- Complexity: Some feel that masculine fragrances offer more olfactory depth and sophistication.
- Contrast: A "masculine" woody or oriental on a woman creates an interesting, unexpected contrast — a fragrance that speaks of confidence and individuality.
- Simply preference: They find these perfumes more beautiful. Full stop.
What Does Your Perfume Say About You?
The choice of a perfume reveals personality, not gender. A woman who chooses Asad or African Legend is communicating something about herself — about her strength, her confidence, her taste for the powerful and the complex. This is infinitely more interesting than "it's for men".
At Parfum Inspirations, we deliberately don't impose gender labels on our perfumes. Every fragrance in our catalogue is available to everyone. Our fragrance families guide will help you navigate by scent profile rather than by gender label. Explore our woody and oriental collection for the fragrances most appreciated beyond gender boundaries.
